1. The political crisis in Rivers State persists despite initial peace signs after a meeting where Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed commitment to peace. Doubts surround the signing of the 8-point resolution favoring Nyesom Wike  The recent meeting led to a resolution, prompting opposition from Fubara’s camp. The PDP has called for fresh elections for 25 vacant seats, rejecting the truce. Stakeholders criticized the intervention, suggesting it may promote godfatherism. Various figures have also concerns, viewing the accord as potentially harmful and a trap. The situation remains tense, with ongoing scrutiny of the political developments.

2. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has exposed a list of adulterated wines and drinks circulating in Nigeria. The agency has identified various brands, including Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, and others. NAFDAC intercepted counterfeiters producing beverages in Aba, Abia State, raided over 240 shops-turned factories, destroying over 1,500 cartons of fake products valued at over N750 million. The adulteration involves the use of cheaper sources of sugar, starch, harmful chemicals, and cloned packaging materials. NAFDAC has shut down the market involved in the illegal activities and warns of health risks from consuming adulterated alcohol, urging consumers to scrutinize products for authenticity.

3. Social media personality Toke Makinwa expressed joy as Chief Pius Akinyelure, whom she refers to as “daddy,” was appointed Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) by President Bola Tinubu. Toke applauded his years of service in the oil sector, stating that he is the right person for the job. 4.  Debt Management Office Director-General, Patience Oniha, disclosed a significant 133.95% surge in domestic debt, reaching N51.96 trillion by the end of 2023. The government acquired N7.04 trillion through new domestic borrowing, defended by Oniha as attributed to securitized Ways and Means Advances. This brings the total domestic debt to N25.60 trillion, excluding these advances. Oniha anticipates sustained domestic market engagement in 2024, highlighting strong investor interest, while global uncertainties keep foreign market rates high.
