The Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has condemned a reported attack on African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders in Edo State, alleging the assailants targeted former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News on Wednesday monitored by The News Chronicle, Tanko said security arrangements by the Edo State Government were inadequate despite prior notice of the visit.
“The attackers followed us to the house. They wanted to assassinate Peter Obi. There were people who were obviously trailing us,” Tanko said.
He stated that the security team engaged the attackers in a shootout near the residence of former Edo State governor Adigun Oyegun, allowing the delegation to escape.
The incident comes months after Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo warned that Obi must obtain security clearance before visiting the state.
Recall that Obi had visited Benin on July 7, donating ₦15 million to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences.
Okpebholo linked the visit to a spike in violence in the state.
“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed.
“For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance. This will not be tolerated.” The governor declared.
