The True Meaning of Feminism

Steps Nigeria Needs To Take As We Clock 64
Debra Godwin

Feminism is:

– A movement for social, political, and economic equality between women and men

– A challenge to patriarchal systems and structures that perpetuate gender-based discrimination

– A commitment to empowering women and promoting their rights and agency

Feminism is NOT:

– Anti-men or anti-male

– About promoting women over men

– A singular, monolithic ideology

– Only for women (feminism benefits everyone!)

Few examples of true feminists:

Malala Yousafzai, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Wangari Maathai, Frida Kahlo

These women embody the spirit of feminism through their work, advocacy, and commitment to creating a more just and equitable world for all.

Wrong interpretation of feminism:

1. Misandry: Hating or discriminating against men, which is not feminism but rather its opposite.

2. Gender reversal: Advocating for female superiority over men, rather than equality.

3. Exclusionary feminism: Focusing solely on the experiences of privileged women, neglecting intersectionality and the struggles of marginalized groups.

4. Hypocrisy: Advocating for women’s rights while engaging in sexist or discriminatory behavior.

5. Objectification: Reducing individuals to their physical appearance or using sexualized language/image.

6. Bullying or shaming: Using aggressive tactics to silence or shame others, rather than engaging in respectful dialogue.

These instances undermine the principles of feminism, which seeks equality, inclusivity, and respect for all individuals.

Every belief system, no matter how noble or well-intentioned, can be hijacked or misinterpreted by extremists or individuals with ulterior motives. This can lead to a distorted representation of the original principles and values.

It’s essential to distinguish between the core teachings and values of a belief system and the actions of individuals who claim to represent it.

Islam is a religion of peace, but some extremists have misused it to justify terrorism.

Christianity emphasizes love and compassion, but some individuals have used it to justify hate and intolerance.

Democracy, as a system of government, aims to serve the people, but corrupt politicians have exploited it for personal gain.

We must not judge a belief system solely by the actions of its extremes or misrepresentations. Instead, we should strive to understand the core principles and values that underlie each system and work towards promoting the positive aspects while addressing the negative ones.
