The Trinity of Love

Shikrot Mpwi – Sunday Synopsis

Fr. Justine John DYIKUK

Dear friends in Christ,

On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, Year A (31 May 2026), I bring you greetings and God’s blessings!

Theme: The Trinity of Love

Introduction

Trinity Sunday highlights the belief of three divine persons in one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is referred to as God in Philippians 1:2, the Son in John 1:1 and 14, and the Holy Spirit in Acts 5:3-4. The Church represents the mystical body of Christ, with the Holy Spirit as the sanctifier, emphasizing the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

St. Augustine of Hippo once struggled to explain the Trinity and, while at the beach, saw a boy trying to pour seawater into a hole. When the Saint pointed out the futility of the task, the boy replied, “It is also impossible for you to explain the Trinity,” before vanishing. Hence, the Trinity remains a profound mystery.

Overview of the Readings

The first reading (Ex 34:4B-6, 8-9) recounts how the glory of the Lord descended upon Moses at Sinai as he received the tablets of stone. Moses called upon God, who is described as “The Lord—full of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness and faithfulness,” and he pleaded for the Lord to embrace the children of Israel as His heritage.

In the second reading (2 Cor 13:11-13), St. Paul wishes the Corinthian community perfect happiness and urges them to “be united” and “live in peace.” He encourages them to greet one another with the Holy Kiss and prays for the grace and love of the Lord and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit to be with them.

The gospel (John 3:16-18) highlights the encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus, where the Lord affirms, “No one who believes in him will be condemned.” It summarises the story of salvation, emphasising that God so loved the world that He sent His Son, so that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.

Takeaway Lessons

1. In a world rife with vendetta and conflict, we are called to emulate the triune God, described as “The Lord – full of tenderness, compassion, and faithfulness,” while honouring St. Paul’s call for “a holy kiss.”

2. As Moses pleaded for God to claim Israel as His heritage, we must abandon Judas’ kiss of betrayal and embrace St. Paul’s kiss of love, standing in the breach for others.

3. The Church invites all to “be united and live in peace,” striving to create a better world for everyone.

4. Trinity Sunday encourages us to reflect on the Father’s creativity, the Son’s sacrificial love, and the Spirit’s sanctifying presence in our lives and the world.

5. In a society obsessed with fame and fortune, Trinitarian Communion (cf. John 3:13; Matthew 28:20) urges us to worship and serve the Triune God alone.

Conclusion

In the spirit of our shared fellowship, we are once again encouraged to greet one another with the Holy Kiss. This gesture serves as a metaphor for the Trinity, reminding us of the divine relationship that was revealed during Jesus’ baptism (Cf. Matthew 3:16-17) and transfiguration (Cf. Matthew 17:1-13). May our celebration inspire meaningful change in our lives as the Blessed Trinity motivates us toward a greater nation, united under God. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!
