The Ghost Economy: Why Nigeria Must Stop Educating Children for a World That No Longer Exists

A child entering Primary 1 in a Nigerian classroom today may not enter the world of work until around 2040. By then, the economy into which that child steps may bear only a faint resemblance to the one we are preparing them for today.

Think about that child for a moment.

Perhaps the child is sitting on a wooden bench in an overcrowded classroom, sharing a desk with two other pupils. Perhaps the teacher is standing beside a blackboard, trying to make a lesson memorable in a room where there are more children than there are books. The child is copying what is written, answering questions, doing homework and preparing for the next examination.

Everything appears normal.

But there is a question hiding beneath that ordinary school day which Nigeria has not asked with enough urgency: what exactly are we preparing this child to become?

By the time that child reaches adulthood, artificial intelligence will be woven into ordinary work. Machines will perform tasks that currently occupy entire departments. Digital finance will have transformed commerce. Biotechnology will be changing medicine and agriculture. Renewable energy will reshape how communities produce and consume power. New professions will exist that we cannot yet name, while some jobs that seem secure today will have quietly disappeared.

The future will not arrive as a dramatic event. It will seep into everyday life until the skills that once guaranteed employment become insufficient.

And yet, across large parts of Nigeria, we are still educating children as though the destination of schooling is the same destination it was for their parents and grandparents.

That is the contradiction at the heart of Nigerian education.

We are preparing children for an economy that has already died while telling ourselves that we are preparing them for the future.

For much of Nigeria’s postcolonial history, the bargain was understandable. Work hard at school, pass your examinations, obtain a degree and find a respectable job. The degree represented more than academic achievement. It represented mobility. It was supposed to be the bridge between childhood and economic security.

For many families, that belief remains powerful because it was once true enough to sustain an entire social imagination.

Parents still tell children to study hard because they remember a time when academic excellence could reliably open doors. A first class meant something. A university degree could distinguish you from the crowd. A government appointment, a bank job, a teaching position or a place in a large company could provide the stability around which an entire family might build its future.

But the labour market has changed faster than our educational imagination.

Today, Nigeria can produce graduates faster than it produces suitable jobs for them. Young people accumulate certificates, qualifications and professional training and still find themselves asking the same humiliating question: what next?

We often describe this as youth unemployment.

It is that, but it is also something deeper.

We have built an education system that teaches young people to compete for opportunities more effectively than it teaches them to create opportunities.

That distinction may determine Nigeria’s economic future.

There is nothing inherently wrong with examinations. There is nothing wrong with teaching facts, dates, formulas, theories or established knowledge. A child cannot become an engineer without mathematics, a doctor without science, a writer without language or a responsible citizen without an understanding of history.

The problem is not knowledge.

The problem is what happens when memorising knowledge becomes the dominant proof of intelligence.

A Nigerian child can spend years learning how to reproduce information under examination conditions and still leave school without knowing how to apply that knowledge to an unfamiliar problem.

A student may know the textbook definition of entrepreneurship but have never been required to identify a problem in their community and design a solution around it. A student may study agriculture without ever seeing how satellite imagery, irrigation technology, sensors, greenhouse systems or data can transform farming. Another may study commerce without understanding how modern businesses use digital payments, automated accounting, logistics platforms and online markets.

The issue is not that a barometer belongs in a museum or that ledger books have become completely useless.

The issue is that the lesson must no longer end where the textbook ends.

If a child learns how a barometer works, why not connect that knowledge to weather monitoring, environmental science and modern sensors? If a student learns accounting, why not show them how businesses actually manage money using digital systems? If they study agriculture, why not expose them to the technologies that will determine whether farming becomes a modern industry or remains trapped in subsistence?

The child entering Primary 1 today does not need less knowledge.

The child needs a different relationship with knowledge.

That transformation should begin from the earliest years.

Reading, writing and arithmetic must remain sacred. But they should become the foundation upon which children learn how to think, communicate, investigate and solve problems. A primary school child should know not only how to count money, but what money represents. They should understand saving, spending, sharing and basic resource allocation. They should learn to speak confidently before others, work with classmates, care for plants, understand simple health and safety practices and participate in activities that make learning feel connected to life.

This is not about turning every primary school into a technology laboratory.

It is about refusing to make the classroom a place where life stops at the textbook.

By junior secondary school, curiosity should become part of the curriculum rather than an inconvenience to it. Children should begin to encounter coding, digital literacy, structured debate, environmental problem solving and practical projects. They should learn how to investigate a question rather than simply wait for the teacher to provide an answer.

They should also be allowed to fail.

That may sound like a small reform, but it is not.

Our examination culture has quietly taught generations of Nigerian children that failure is something to be feared rather than information to be used. Yet almost everything worth building in science, business, technology, art and public life involves trial, error, revision and persistence.

The child who is never allowed to fail safely in school may grow into the adult who is terrified of attempting anything that does not come with guaranteed instructions.

That is a dangerous thing to teach a country that desperately needs innovation.

By senior secondary school, we should also begin dismantling the rigid boxes into which Nigerian students have traditionally been placed. Science, Arts and Commercial subjects once made sense within a particular educational and economic structure. But the modern economy is increasingly indifferent to those boundaries.

A person developing an agricultural technology company may need biology, engineering, data, finance and communication. A future doctor will increasingly interact with artificial intelligence and biotechnology. A filmmaker may need technology, business knowledge and intellectual property law. A public policy professional may need economics, statistics, technology and communication.

The world’s problems do not arrive neatly labelled Science, Arts or Commercial.

Why should our children be trained to see them that way?

Nigeria should therefore create flexible pathways through fields such as artificial intelligence and data science, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, healthcare and biotechnology, digital commerce and financial technology, modern agriculture and food processing, creative media and digital storytelling, engineering, law, governance and public policy.

But even this must be approached carefully.

The objective should not be to turn every child into a programmer, entrepreneur or technology enthusiast. That would simply create a new form of conformity.

The objective is more fundamental.

Every child should leave school knowing how to learn, how to adapt, how to communicate, how to solve problems and how to turn an idea into something useful.

That brings us to another problem: the way we measure education.

For too long, we have allowed a handful of examinations to become the courtroom in which a child’s intellectual worth is decided.

A student can spend an entire year struggling, improving, building, experimenting and learning, only for all of that development to be compressed into a few hours of examination. The result is a system that can reward short term memory more reliably than curiosity, creativity or sustained competence.

Imagine a different model.

Imagine a secondary school graduate leaving with an examination record, but also with a portfolio of actual work. A student interested in technology might have built a working application. Another might have completed a community environmental project. Another might have spent time in a structured technical apprenticeship. Another might have developed a small agricultural enterprise, conducted a research project or produced a serious body of creative work.

The certificate would still matter.

But the certificate would no longer have to speak alone.

Behind it would be evidence.

When a young Nigerian finishes secondary school, we should be able to ask a simple question:

What can this person actually do?

That question should also change the way we think about higher education.

Nigeria cannot build a modern economy while continuing to treat the university as the unquestioned summit of intelligence and everything else as a lesser road. A country that wants to manufacture, construct, repair, design, install, maintain and invent needs highly skilled technicians just as urgently as it needs lawyers, economists and academics.

Polytechnics and technical institutions should not be where students are sent after society has decided that university was beyond their reach. They should be respected institutions for people who want to build things with their hands, machines and minds.

Vocational education should not be the punishment for failing academically.

It should be one of the legitimate ways of succeeding.

And perhaps this is where the entire argument eventually arrives.

We have spent too long imagining education primarily as a journey toward employment.

Go to school.

Get good grades.

Obtain a certificate.

Find a job.

But who creates the jobs?

Who builds the companies?

Who develops the technologies?

Who turns Nigeria’s enormous agricultural potential into modern food industries?

Who designs affordable energy systems for communities that cannot depend on a reliable national grid?

Who builds financial products for people traditional banking has ignored?

Who develops software for African realities rather than simply importing solutions designed for someone else’s problems?

Who turns waste into value, local materials into products and neighbourhood problems into businesses?

A country of more than two hundred million people cannot build lasting prosperity if its educational system trains the majority of its young population primarily to wait for vacancies.

Education must become an engine of capability.

Not every child will become an employer. Not every child should become an entrepreneur. But every child should understand that they possess the capacity to create value.

That is a radically different philosophy of education.

It moves the child from being a passive recipient of information to becoming an active participant in the creation of knowledge and solutions.

And that is ultimately what the coming economy will demand.

The great mistake would be to assume that preparing children for the future means filling classrooms with computers and teaching them fashionable technological vocabulary. Technology is only part of the transformation.

The deeper challenge is teaching children to remain intellectually alive in a world where machines will increasingly perform routine tasks.

We must teach them to ask better questions.

To recognise problems.

To distinguish information from understanding.

To work with people who think differently.

To adapt when the rules change.

To build when there is nothing to copy.

To continue learning after the certificate has been framed and hung on the wall.

Because the child entering Primary 1 today will eventually leave our schools.

Perhaps in 2040, that child will sit in an office, laboratory, workshop, hospital, studio, farm, factory or government institution and confront a problem that does not appear in any textbook we have given them.

At that moment, the examination result will not be enough.

The certificate will not solve the problem.

The memorised answer will not save them.

What will matter is whether we taught that child how to think.

That is the decision Nigeria is really making now.

We are not merely deciding what children should study. We are deciding what kind of adults they will become and what kind of country those adults will inherit.

The future will not wait for Nigeria to finish debating whether the old system needs another committee, another curriculum review or another policy document. The future is already arriving through the phones in our children’s hands, the technologies changing workplaces, the businesses being built without traditional offices and the machines learning tasks that humans once considered uniquely their own.

The child in that Primary 1 classroom does not know any of this yet.

They are simply learning to read.

But one day, they will inherit the consequences of what we chose to teach them.

And when 2040 arrives, we should hope that child does not look back at the classroom and realise that we spent fourteen of their most formative years teaching them how to survive an economy that had already disappeared.

We owe that child something better than preparation for the past.

We owe them an education capable of meeting the future when it arrives.

Because the greatest failure of Nigerian education would not be producing children who cannot remember enough.

It would be producing children who know how to pass yesterday’s examination, only to discover that tomorrow’s world never asked them the questions we spent their childhood teaching them to answer.
