Morocco has stepped up its push to host the 2030 World Cup final, with Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa insisting the showpiece will take place in Casablanca.
Lekjaa reportedly made the claim at a political event in Bouznika, naming the Benslimane province as the location for the final.
“The province of Benslimane will have the honour of hosting the 2030 World Cup final,” Lekjaa said.
The proposed venue is the Hassan II Stadium, currently under construction near Casablanca at an estimated cost of $1 billion. The stadium is expected to accommodate about 115,000 spectators, which would make it the largest football-specific stadium in the world.
However, FIFA has yet to officially decide where the final will be played. The governing body said a decision would be made in due course and previously dismissed reports that president Gianni Infantino had promised Morocco the final.
The News Chronicle reports that Spain is also pushing to host the tournament’s biggest match, setting up a major battle between the two European and African co-hosts.
The 2030 World Cup will be staged across six countries and three continents, with Morocco, Spain and Portugal hosting most of the tournament.
