Teachers in Kaduna, Sokoto, and Borno threaten to strike due to student kidnappings

—

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), below college level, might tell all teachers in troubled states to stop working unless the government acts quickly to rescue the students and teachers who were kidnapped recently.

Dr. Mike Ene, a leader in NUT, said this in an interview with Newsmen recently.

He said that teachers in some states in the north, like Borno, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Plateau, are scared to go to school because they don’t know if they or their students will be attacked or kidnapped while they’re at school.

Dr. Ene said that because of this, NUT is going to have a quick meeting next week to talk about what teachers in these states should do if the government doesn’t rescue them and their students.

He said, “We might tell our teachers in those states to stop working until the schools are safe for them and their students.”

Dr. Ene also talked about how bad it is that schools are becoming easy targets for bad people again. He said it’s not fair or right.

He wondered how bad people can take away so many students at once without anyone noticing or calling for help. He said it’s strange and worrying.

Dr. Ene also talked about how important it is for the government to do something to keep schools safe, “so we don’t have another situation like what happened with the Chibok girls in 2014. He said some of the girls are still missing even after many years.

“We don’t want a repeat of what happened to Chibok girls in 2014 when about 300 school girls were abducted and till now some are still in captivity 10 years after.

He said the government should take urgent action to keep all schools safe, not just in the north but everywhere in the country. He also said people need to be more careful and report anything suspicious they see.

“So, attacks on schools are not only on students and teachers but on the country’s educational system”

He suggested having local police in communities to help keep them safe, like they do in the UK. He said these local police would know the area better and be able to protect people better.
