Taraba State reintroduces teaching of history in primary schools

The Taraba State Government has announced its intention to reintroduce history as a subject in the basic education curriculum for schools within the state.

Governor Agbu Kefas shared this information during a dinner with journalists in Jalingo on Sunday. Notably, history was removed from primary and secondary education curriculums during the 2009/2010 academic session.

In a move aligning with a national trend, the Federal Government of Nigeria had previously reintroduced history as a standalone subject in the basic education curriculum in November 2022, marking a significant return after a 13-year absence.

Governor Kefas emphasized the intrinsic connection between history and societal development, stating that a society cannot truly progress without its residents possessing a sound understanding of their history.

He expressed the state’s commitment to introducing history studies in primary and secondary schools, aiming to establish a robust foundation for accelerated development.

Moreover, Governor Kefas outlined plans to enhance the quality of education in the state by setting educational standards for teachers.

He proposed that primary school teachers should hold a first-degree qualification, while secondary school teachers should have a minimum of a Master’s degree.

The governor urged journalists to actively monitor the implementation of the state government’s free education policy in primary and secondary schools.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring that school administrators adhere to the correct procedures to provide quality education.

Acknowledging the role of journalists, Governor Kefas commended them for their objective reporting and pledged to support the press.

He committed to renovating the press center in Jalingo and providing operational vehicles to various groups under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Former Taraba Commissioner for Information, Mr. Danjuma Adamu, emphasized the need for the state government to view journalists as partners in progress.

Commissioner for Information, Hajiya Zainab Jalingo, echoed this sentiment, calling for a continued partnership with journalists to better serve the people of the state.

In response, the Taraba NUJ Chairman, Mr. Matthew Jen, and the state NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman, Mr. Gabriel Yough, assured the governor of their commitment to objective reportage for the benefit of all.
