Supreme Court Reserves Judgement On Plateau Guber Poll

The Supreme Court has on Tuesday 9 January 2024 reserved judgement on an appeal filed by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State seeking to validated his mandate, which was nullified by the Court of Appeal in November 2023.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of the (PDP) scored 525,299 votes to beat the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, who garnered 481,370 votes during the March 18 2023 governorship election held in Plateau State.

Mutfwang’s election was upheld by the Plateau State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos, the state capital after an appealed file by the APC Candidate in the state was dismissed.
However, the court of appeal in its decision held in November last year invalidated Mr Mutfwang’s victory, a situation that prompted him to file an appeal at the Supreme Court to challenge the decision of the lower court.

Meantime, at the hearing of the appeal on Tuesday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court headed by John Okoro, took arguments from lawyers to parties in the case, after a frenetic session of arguments between Mr Mutfwang’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, and Mr Yilwatda’s counsel, J.O Olatoke.

This led to the Supreme Court’s decision to set a later date which would be communicated to parties in the suit, for final judgement.
Expectedly Supreme Court is to deliver a verdict on the matter before the 16th of January 2024, when the appeal will expire.
