The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in collaboration with security agencies in Nasarawa State, has pledged to strictly enforce campaign guidelines and electoral laws ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mallam Muhammed Abubakar, made this known on Tuesday in Lafia at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
Abubakar said the commission would deepen its collaboration with security agencies to address emerging and anticipated security challenges ahead of the elections.
He said the partnership would ensure that political parties and candidates complied with campaign regulations while promoting a peaceful and conducive environment for all participants.
“We will not condone hate speech, incitement, political violence and defacement of public property in accordance with the Constitution and Electoral Act.
“Political campaigns must be issue-based and in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC regulations,” he said.
The REC urged security agencies to proactively monitor campaign activities and arrest offenders irrespective of their political affiliation.
According to him, the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend largely on the security and overall environment in which they are conducted.
“Voters must feel safe to exercise their franchise and electoral personnel must be secured to carry out their duties without fear or intimidation,” he said.
Abubakar expressed confidence that strengthened collaboration, intelligence sharing and a unified approach among ICCES members would enhance election security in the state.
He said INEC had already commenced preparations for the 2027 elections, including the conduct of continuous voter registration, which ended on July 11, 2026, as well as the release of the notice of election, campaign timetable and lists of candidates.
With the completion of the major preliminary activities, he said the commission was now focused on creating a safe, peaceful, transparent and credible electoral environment.
Abubakar also commended members of ICCES for their contributions to the successful conduct of the June 20 bye-election in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
He urged them to sustain the cooperation and commitment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting was attended by Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police and ICCES co-Chairman, Shetima Mohammed, alongside heads of other security agencies in the state.
