The Nigerian Army has dismissed a soldier after a viral video in which he urged politicians to enlist their children in the military sparked nationwide debate.
The soldier, identified as Rotimi Olamilekan, a Lance Corporal who reportedly served for about eight years, including deployments in Maiduguri, gained widespread attention after sharing a video on social media.
In the clip, he appealed to political leaders, governors, lawmakers, and ministers to allow their sons to join the armed forces and experience the dangers soldiers face on the frontlines.
Olamilekan expressed frustration over the continued loss of colleagues in the fight against insecurity, arguing that many in positions of power appear disconnected from the realities of combat. His remarks resonated with many Nigerians, who praised his courage and echoed concerns about troop welfare.
Following the video’s circulation, the soldier was reportedly arrested in February 2026 and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary proceedings. After an internal review, he was dismissed from service.
Although the Army did not publicly outline all charges, such disciplinary actions are typically linked to breaches of military conduct, particularly unauthorised public statements.
Reports also emerged alleging that the soldier faced harsh treatment during detention, including difficult conditions and limited medical care. These claims, however, have not been independently verified by military authorities.
The development has drawn criticism from civil society groups, including the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, which warned that the dismissal could affect morale among troops battling insecurity. The group argued that the soldier’s comments reflected genuine frustrations within the ranks.
The incident has reignited debate over the welfare of Nigerian soldiers and the perceived gap between political leadership and those fighting on the frontlines.
While the military maintains strict discipline and communication rules, many observers say the concerns raised deserve attention rather than punishment.
