The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the death of seven persons and injuries to four others following a fatal motor accident along the Badejo axis in Potiskum Local Government Area of the state.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued to journalists in Damaturu by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dungus Abdulkarim, on Saturday.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Friday December 26, 2025, at about 4:30pm, when the Potiskum Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call about a serious road crash.
The accident involved a Sharon bus conveying passengers from Lawanti area of Akko Local Government Area in Gombe State to Maiduguri, Borno State. Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, driven by one Gambo Abbo, suffered a rear tyre burst while in motion.
The sudden mechanical failure reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and plunged into the bush. As a result, the driver and four passengers died on the spot, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Police operatives from the Motor Traffic Department were immediately mobilised to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to the State Specialist Hospital, Potiskum, for medical treatment.
The PPRO added that two of the injured later died while receiving treatment, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and identification.
The victims were identified as Gambo Abbo (35), Umalkhairi (18), Rabiu Abubakar (28), Fatuma Hassan (28), Amal Abubakar (3), Adamu Bello (4), and Zarau Alhaji (27).
The Command stated that efforts are ongoing to reach and formally notify the families of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring road safety across Yobe State.
The CP cautioned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, stressing the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations.
He also emphasised the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly the inspection of critical components such as tyres, brakes, and steering systems before embarking on any journey.
According to him, compliance with these safety measures remains vital in preventing avoidable road accidents.
The Command further assured the public of its resolve to safeguard lives and property, while urging road users to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by observing all traffic and safety regulations.
