Popular American singer and actress Selena Gomez recently opened up about the intense preparation she underwent for her role in the new Spanish musical, Emilia Pérez.
The pop star, who has captivated audiences with her music and acting, revealed that she made significant sacrifices to fully embrace this new and challenging role.
During a Question-and-Answer session with the cast of Emilia Pérez at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival on Sunday, September 1, 2024, Gomez shared the dedication and effort she poured into her performance. She disclosed that in order to do justice to her character, she decided to take a step back from her music career and other professional commitments.
“I stopped working on my music and anything else, and solely focused on this musical,” Gomez explained. “Every day, I’d wake up and rehearse the lines over and over again. And I’d call in the middle of the night, my Spanish teacher.” This commitment highlights how determined Gomez was to master the language and bring authenticity to her role.
In Emilia Pérez, Gomez plays the character Jessi Del Monte, a role that required not only acting skills but also fluency in Spanish, a language Gomez worked hard to perfect. Reflecting on her experience, she mentioned that singing in the film was particularly “therapeutic,” suggesting that the process allowed her to connect deeply with the character and the story.
The excitement surrounding Emilia Pérez has been building, especially after Netflix released the first trailer for the Spanish-language French film on August 26. The movie, which also stars the talented Zoe Saldaña, is described as “an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations.” This intriguing synopsis promises viewers a unique cinematic experience.
Whether through her music or her acting, she continues to push boundaries and explore new creative avenues to show her craft.
