Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has initiated the Eko Cares Initiative, a socio-economic intervention program to address economic challenges in the country.
The program’s first phase has been designed to benefit over 500,000 households; with the fair distribution of food items to less privileged residents a priority to hinder hoarding.
Food items will be distributed through various channels, involving community leaders, religious organizations, trade unions, youth organizations, People with Disabilities clusters, and human rights groups.
Sanwo-Olu also announced the continuation of the Ounje Eko market initiative.
He pointed out other measures his administration had undertaken to support residents during economic hardships, such as providing discounted food in markets, medical outreach programs, and fare charges on ferry services, buses, and trains.
He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic measures and urged citizens to cooperate through solidarity and responsible pricing practices, especially in response to currency fluctuations.
Regarding the minimum wage, Sanwo-Olu assured that his government had been paying a minimum of N35,000 since January, which is above the previous minimum of N25,000, as they were committed to improving citizens’ lives.
The Eko Cares Initiative has received praise from Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso, who commended Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and commitment to fulfilling his manifesto.
He described the initiative as a milestone for Sanwo-Olu in supporting the vulnerable and improving the lives of Lagosians.
