The House of Representatives descended into a heated and rowdy session on Wednesday after a lawmaker called for President Bola Tinubu to appear before lawmakers over what he described as the poor implementation of the 2026 budget and persistent delays in releasing funds to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh, while moving the motion, argued that the slow execution of the budget was crippling government operations and worsening the country’s security challenges.
“Agencies are not being funded. Our people are kidnapped every day. Heads are being chopped off on national television every day. We want to invite the President of Nigeria, as our father, to come and explain why we are spending trillions of naira on coastal roads while Nigerians are dying,” Ikwechegh said.
His proposal immediately sparked fierce resistance on the floor, with several lawmakers shouting him down and demanding that he and supporters of the motion take their seats.
The confrontation triggered a chaotic debate that stalled proceedings for nearly 30 minutes as members traded arguments over the propriety of summoning the President.
However, the motion was ultimately struck down after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas ruled against it.
Abbas said the prayers presented on the floor were inconsistent with those contained in the original motion submitted by Ikwechegh, describing the discrepancy as a deviation from the approved text and citing it as the basis for rejecting the motion.
