Protesters in Nigeria Demand Bailout, decrying Harsh Crackdown

—

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which erupted on August 1, 2024, have engulfed northern Nigeria in a wave of unrest and destruction, sparking widespread calls for government intervention.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s plea for an end to the demonstrations, the protests have persisted, fueled by severe economic challenges and growing discontent among the populace.
The government’s heavy-handed response has drawn national and international criticism, especially as the death toll continues to rise.
Initial reports indicate that at least 17 people lost their lives, and numerous others were injured during the first few days of the protests in major cities such as Abuja, Kano, and Suleja.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the brutal actions of security forces, with the Nigerian Army later confirming the use of live ammunition against the protesters.
This revelation directly contradicts earlier statements made by the Inspector-General of Police, who denied that excessive force had been employed.
Amnesty International swiftly condemned the violence, accusing Nigerian security personnel of using deliberate and lethal tactics against what were primarily peaceful protests.
Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka also spoke out against the use of live bullets, criticizing the government’s response as heavy-handed and unjustifiable.
The human cost of the crackdown has been immense. Across various states, individuals have shared harrowing accounts of the violence they endured.
In Gombe, several people sustained severe injuries from gunshots and other forms of violence. Mohammed Abdulrawuf, an 18-year-old who was not participating in the protests, recounted how he was shot by security forces, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence.
Similarly, Femi Kuku, a journalist covering the protests, suffered a dislocated leg after being shot at by security operatives.
The protests have also led to widespread vandalism and looting. In Kano, Barakat Stores reported losses exceeding N5 billion due to theft and destruction.
Numerous other businesses, religious institutions, and public facilities were also targeted by looters, compounding the chaos.
In response to these events, there has been a growing outcry for justice and compensation for the victims of the violence.
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, along with Afenifere, a prominent pan-Yoruba group, has demanded thorough investigations and accountability for the actions of the security forces.
The pressure on the government is mounting, with various groups calling for immediate measures to address the grievances of those affected.
In a recent development, the Governor of Kaduna State pledged to investigate the death of a teenager who was killed by soldiers during the protests.
However, this promise has done little to quell the anger and frustration felt by many Nigerians.
The calls for federal intervention continue to grow louder, with demands for the government to support the affected individuals and families and to ensure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.
As the #EndBadGovernance protests continue to unfold, Nigeria stands at a crossroads, with the potential for further unrest if the underlying issues are not addressed.
The situation remains volatile, with the international community closely watching how the government responds to the escalating crisis.
