Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Police Force, have foiled an attack by suspected armed herders on Azege Village, Tombo Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a statement made available to The News Chronicle on Tuesday, the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters JTF Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, said the troops responded swiftly to a distress call on August 10, 2026, reporting an attack on the Azege community.
According to the statement, the troops mobilised to the area and engaged the suspected attackers in a gun battle upon arrival.
The assailants were reportedly overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the security forces and fled in disarray.
The troops subsequently launched a pursuit of the fleeing attackers and discovered one suspected armed herder neutralised during the encounter.
Recovered from the scene were one AK-47 rifle, one magazine loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and one Nokia mobile phone.
The statement said the recovered items had been secured, while the remains of the neutralised assailant were evacuated by the police.
It added that efforts were ongoing to track and apprehend other members of the group who escaped from the scene.
The Joint Task Force commended the troops for their tactical resilience and praised the Nigerian Police Force for its effective cooperation during the operation.
It also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities within their communities to security agencies.
