The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu FCVSN, has called for a more coordinated and robust approach to securing Nigerian universities in the face of deepening national security challenges.
Delivering an engaging lecture at the 70th edition of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) Monthly Series held on Thursday in Abuja, Prof. Ribadu spoke on the theme “Coordinating University Education in Nigeria in the Context of Deepening National Security Challenges.”
His presentation examined the interconnection between university education and national security, stressing that Nigeria’s higher education system remains both a critical national asset and a vulnerable target.
Prof. Ribadu highlighted existing gaps within the Nigerian University System (NUS), noting that insecurity in and around campuses threatens not only the safety of students and staff but also the quality and continuity of academic activities.
He observed that while universities face these vulnerabilities, they also present immense opportunities as centres of innovation, knowledge production, and social stability.
Prof. Ribadu further underscored the need for a comprehensive University Security Framework that would provide clear guidelines for coordinated action, promote synergy among institutions, and enhance preparedness across campuses nationwide.
Such a framework, he said, would help safeguard the academic environment while enabling universities to play a more strategic role in national development.
While stressing that his recommendations were not exhaustive, he described them as part of a broader conversation on how government, university administrators, and security agencies can collaborate more effectively.
According to him, proactive measures, stronger policy alignment, and sustained investment in university security are essential to ensuring safer campuses and a more resilient higher education sector.
The lecture drew the attention of senior military officers, scholars, policymakers, and other stakeholders who commended the NUC for its commitment to repositioning the higher education system in line with Nigeria’s security and development priorities.
