I’m Running for President- Amaechi Rules Out VP Role, Confirms Presidential Ambition

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has denied reports linking him to a vice-presidential slot with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting he is solely focused on the presidency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The clarification comes after Atiku’s ally, media entrepreneur Dele Momodu, suggested Amaechi could be considered if 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi decides to run solo. Momodu had said:

“Amaechi is often underrated. He single-handedly delivered Buhari’s victory. Even more than Tinubu, he mobilized support effectively. If Obi steps aside or runs alone, the mantle could fall on Amaechi.”

Responding, Amaechi’s media aide, David Iyofor, emphasized:

“Amaechi is not seeking to be anyone’s running mate. He will not be part of any such discussion. He is running to be President of Nigeria, not a deputy. Politicians should leave his name out of any vice-presidential speculation.”

Amaechi, who contested the APC presidential ticket in 2023, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier this year and is pursuing the party’s nomination for the 2027 election, asserting it is Southern Nigeria’s turn to produce the nation’s next president.
