The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has received the prestigious AfriGEO Weather, Climate, and Early Warning Services Award in recognition of its outstanding contributions to climate resilience, weather forecasting, and early warning systems driven by Earth observation technologies.
The recognition was presented to the Director-General and CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju. The presentation took place during the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner held in Abuja on October 7, 2026, marking a major highlight of the 10th AfriGEO Symposium.
Convened under the theme “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” the 2026 symposium gathered policymakers, scientists, development partners, and private-sector leaders from across AfriGEO’s 33 member states. The annual event serves as Africa’s premier platform for deploying geospatial information, environmental intelligence, and Earth observation tools to drive sustainable development across the continent.
Speaking on the agency’s commitment following the award, NiMet reaffirmed its determination to leverage climate science and Earth observation data to strengthen national early warning systems and support evidence-based policy choices.
By continuing to expand strategic partnerships and deliver timely, actionable weather and climate insights, NiMet aims to play a pivotal role in advancing the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda—ensuring a safer and more climate-prepared Nigeria.
