Nigeria Must Act Before Disasters Strike — NEMA, NiMet Move to Build National Early Warning System

The Director General/CEO of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar, on Thursday paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Director General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Charles Anosike, at the NiMet Headquarters in Abuja, with both agencies agreeing to deepen collaboration on disaster preparedness and climate early warning systems.

Speaking during the visit, Mrs. Umar commended NiMet for the early release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and the consistency of its daily weather forecasts, noting that the agency had recorded significant improvements under the leadership of Prof. Anosike.

She explained that the visit, which included key members of the NEMA management team, was aimed at strengthening the long-standing partnership between both agencies in tackling climate-related emergencies across Nigeria.

Mrs. Umar also emphasized the need to integrate NiMet into the NEMA Emergency Operations Centre to improve coordination, disaster preparedness, and rapid response mechanisms nationwide.

Responding, Prof. Charles Anosike welcomed the NEMA delegation and appreciated the recognition of NiMet’s contributions to national development. He noted that NiMet, NEMA, and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency remain critical partners in addressing climate-induced disasters and environmental challenges facing the country.

Prof. Anosike further called for the development of a Nigerian Early Warning System Roadmap to be jointly designed by NiMet, NEMA, and NIHSA as part of efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, coordination, and public trust.

At the end of the meeting, both agencies agreed to immediately establish a joint committee that will develop and implement an Early Warning System Roadmap for Nigeria, a move expected to enhance disaster preparedness and improve emergency response through coordinated action and timely implementation.
