NEWS FLASH: Army Colonel and Several Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Attack in Monguno, Borno

—

A serving Nigerian Army officer, Colonel I.A. Muhammad, has been killed in an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents during a coordinated overnight attack on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Monguno, Borno State.

Military sources said the insurgents struck the 242 Battalion area under Sector 3 operations on Sunday night, prompting the colonel to lead a reinforcement mission to support troops under fire. However, his convoy reportedly ran into a remotely detonated explosive device, killing him instantly along with an unconfirmed number of soldiers.

The attack highlights the continued use of sophisticated improvised explosive devices by insurgents in the North-East, raising fresh concerns over troop safety. Monguno remains a key military hub in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign.

The incident follows a series of deadly assaults on military formations in Borno State in recent weeks, including attacks that claimed the lives of senior officers such as Oseni Braimah, Umar Farouq, S.I. Iliyasu, and Umar Ibrahim Mairiga.
