The United States has praised the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen the country’s judicial system.
US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Fares Boulos, said in a statement on X that Nigeria’s move to accelerate terrorism-related trials reflects a strong commitment to justice and accountability.
He specifically noted the recent conviction of 386 Islamist militants, describing it as a major step forward in addressing long-standing delays in terrorism cases and improving public confidence in the justice system.
According to him, timely and transparent legal proceedings are essential to countering extremism and reinforcing trust in judicial institutions, and he stresses that adherence to the rule of law remains critical to national security and stability.
“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes,” he stated, adding that the convictions represent an important milestone in the fight against terrorism.
The statement comes shortly after the Nigerian government released a list of 48 individuals and groups allegedly involved in terrorism financing.
The list, published by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee, includes persons and organisations believed to be linked to terrorist activities, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
