In a bid to promote unity and integration among the youth, the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) has officially launched a secondary school sports tournament in Adamawa State, on Tuesday.
The event, themed “Promoting Unity, Peace, and Regional Integration,” aims to bring together young students from various parts of the region through sports, fostering a spirit of unity and cooperation from a young age.
The tournament is being held on a zonal basis and features five different sporting events, with the venue set at General Mohammed Murtala College (GMMC) in Yola.
The five-day competition is designed to revive school sports in the Northeast and provide an opportunity for young talents to shine in athletics, basketball, football, tennis, and table tennis.
During the opening ceremony, the Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, addressed the significance of the tournament. Represented by Joshua Ibrahim Sangari, he emphasized that the competition aims to not only unite the youths of the region but also to identify promising talents who could become future stars.
Furthermore, the tournament will encourage participants to excel both in sports and academics, highlighting the importance of a well-rounded education.
“This initiative is part of our efforts to rebuild and strengthen the Northeast. By reviving school sports, we are giving young people a platform to come together, compete, and grow both in skill and character,” Alkali stated.
The tournament will see boys and girls compete across the five different sports, with winners earning the opportunity to represent Adamawa State at the next phase of the competition, which will take place in Bauchi State.
In the opening football match, the Northern zone team triumphed over the Southern zone after a tense penalty shootout.
The match had ended in a 1-1 draw during regular time, but the Northern zone secured a 4-3 victory in the penalties, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting tournament.
With five days of competition ahead, the tournament is expected to produce not only winners but also stronger bonds among the participants, as the NEDC continues to use sports as a tool for unity and development in the region.
