JUST IN: NFF President Gusau, Board Members Resign Amid Pressure, DSS Probe

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, and several members of the federation’s executive committee have resigned amid mounting pressure over the management of Nigerian football.

The development follows a series of setbacks that have raised fresh concerns about the administration and performance of the country’s national teams.

The latest crisis was triggered by the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, the first time Nigeria’s women’s national team has missed the tournament since its inception in 1991.

The NFF board had reportedly come under increasing pressure to resign following the team’s historic failure and other concerns surrounding the management of Nigerian football.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly joined other security agencies in investigating the NFF’s management of a N17 billion intervention fund released by the Federal Government to settle outstanding wages and bonuses owed to players and officials of Nigeria’s national teams.

The pressure on the NFF executive committee intensified as more than half of its members reportedly resigned from their positions.

Eight of the 13 members of the NFF board have allegedly quit, according to the report.

The resignations have further deepened uncertainty within the federation and could affect the scheduled September 27 election into the NFF board in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The latest development comes as calls grow for a major overhaul of the administration of Nigerian football amid concerns over poor results, financial accountability and the management of the country’s national teams.
