Tech Giant, Meta is planning to bring two submarine cables to Nigeria. They will connect in Lagos and Akwa Ibom by the end of November. This news was shared by Director General of the National Information Technology Development of Nigeria, Abdullahi Kashifu, during the Global Tech Africa conference on Friday.
Kashifu said this plan is part of the government’s idea to make digital connections better and bring faster internet to Nigeria. He believes this will help Nigeria be more advanced in the digital world. Before this announcement, some people from Meta visited Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker, met with them and felt hopeful about how these cables might help Nigeria. The Meta team talked about how this project could improve Nigeria’s technology and connect more people to the internet. This new cable is supported by Meta, following Google’s Equiano cable landing in April 2022.
Kalu praised Meta for its support in Nigeria’s digital growth, especially mentioning their investments in cables, mobile partnerships, and helping small businesses. He said, “The news about the 45,000km undersea cable is very exciting and impressive. It could make a big difference in our country’s society and economy.”
