Kano State Government Officially Acknowledges Acquiring 41 luxury SUVs for Its Lawmakers

The Kano State Government has recently confirmed the acquisition of 41 high-end sports utility vehicles (SUVs), each valued at N68 million, for members of the State House of Assembly.

This move has stirred some controversy, given the significant cost involved, especially amidst current economic challenges.

Acknowledging the procurement, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, asserted that it’s within the lawmakers’ rights to have reliable vehicles for their duties.

He emphasized that the decision was made with consideration for the economic climate, with directives from the governor to arrange payment terms that spread the financial burden over time.

Despite criticisms, Sagagi reiterated the governor’s commitment to upholding the rights and responsibilities of all branches of government, as well as prioritizing the welfare of the people of Kano State.

A senior lawmaker, speaking anonymously, defended the purchase, citing past administrations’ similar actions.

‘’Why are you making a mountain out of a mole hill on the purchase of new vehicles for lawmakers? Previous administrations in the state did the same thing,” he said in response to the controversy trailing the purchase of the vehicles.”

When pressed about the disparity in economic conditions, the lawmaker highlighted the vehicles’ role in facilitating legislative duties, including oversight functions.

Reports suggest that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf initially hesitated to approve the purchase, but yielded to pressure from Assembly leaders citing the necessity of new vehicles.

The acquisition of these SUVs for lawmakers in Kano State has sparked debate, underscoring the balancing act between government spending and public accountability, particularly in challenging economic times.
