Her Greatest Legacy Was Compassion, Not Fame — Obi Mourns Dolly Parton

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has mourned the death of legendary American singer and songwriter Dolly Parton, describing her as a compassionate soul whose success never made her forget her humble beginnings.

Obi, in a tribute to the late music icon, said Parton’s greatest legacy went beyond her music, fame, awards and wealth, stressing that her ability to remain humble and committed to helping others made her an enduring inspiration.

According to him, Parton’s upbringing in poverty in rural Tennessee, where she grew up in a large family with limited material resources but strong values of love, faith and resilience, shaped the compassion that defined her life.

He said her humble beginnings were reflected in her music, which spoke powerfully to the experiences of ordinary people, including love, heartbreak, hardship, loneliness and hope.

“Her music gave dignity to people who were often overlooked,” Obi said, noting that Parton’s songs resonated with millions because she sang about struggles she understood from personal experience.

The former Anambra State governor also praised the singer for maintaining her warmth, humility and generosity even at the height of her global success, particularly through her support for children, the poor and vulnerable people.

Obi said Parton’s life demonstrated that success should not sever people from their roots, but should provide an opportunity to give back and lift others.

“I admire Dolly Parton not simply because she became a great musician, but because success never made her forget where she came from,” he said.

He added that Parton transformed her humble beginnings into music that comforted millions and a life of compassion that continues to inspire people around the world.

“For me, that is her greatest song: the sound of a good heart that never forgot its roots,” Obi said.

He prayed that God Almighty, who made her such a compassionate soul, would grant her soul eternal rest.
