JUST IN: FG, States Hint On Creation Of State Police

In a bid to address the challenges of insecurity across the country, the Federal Government alongside the state governments are considering the establishment of state police.

This development was hinted after an emergency meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors held at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday 15 February.

It was gathered that the meeting was in response to the recent increase in food prices, harsh economic realities, and the rising spade of insecurity recorded across the country.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that the process is still in its early stage and would only take shape after more deliberations between stakeholders.

“There is also a discussion around the issue of state police. The federal government and the state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police.

Of course, this is still going to be further discussed. A lot of work has to be done in that direction. But if our government and the state governments agree to the necessity of having state police, this is a significant shift.

Like I said, more work needs to be done in that direction. A lot of meetings will have to happen between the Federal Government and dissolved nationals to see the modalities of achieving this.” He added.

Idris, also disclosed that the Tinubu-led government plans to recruit an unspecified number of personnel to improve the numeric strength of forest rangers and to equally train them so that they can keep the nation’s forests and borders safe.
