2023 AFCON: NFF defends Alex Iwobi following wide criticism

Following the 2023 AFCON, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has come to the defense of Alex Iwobi amidst numerous criticisms he has faced. Iwobi has been subjected to severe bullying following the Super Eagles’ defeat against Côte d’Ivoire.

The NFF issued a statement condemning the relentless criticism aimed at Iwobi, urging Nigerians to refrain from such harsh treatment. They highlighted Iwobi’s dedication and past contributions to the national team, citing his pivotal goal against Zambia that secured Nigeria’s spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“Alex Iwobi does not deserve these attacks. He has a record of utmost dedication to duty and a remarkable attitude of giving his all on international duty. We cannot suddenly forget the great moments he has made on duty for Nigeria, like scoring that goal against Zambia in Uyo that qualified Nigeria for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

With 76 caps, Iwobi is the seventh most-capped Nigerian footballer, a testament to his commitment to representing his country. The NFF emphasizes that such an accomplished player should not be subjected to undue criticism.

“We are talking about someone who is actually the seventh most-capped Nigerian footballer in history. With 76 caps, Alex Iwobi has nothing to prove to anyone about his patriotic fervour and dedication to duty for Nigeria. Please let us show him love and not hatred.”

Despite calls for his retirement and criticism of his performance in the recent AFCON, Iwobi’s track record includes 10 international goals since his debut on October 8, 2015. He played in every game for Nigeria during the tournament, featuring prominently in four matches.
