Italian authorities have issued a notice accusing OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, of violating EU data protection laws. The country’s data protection watchdog has given OpenAI 30 days to respond to the alleged breaches, following a temporary ban on the popular chatbot last year. The watchdog, which had previously blocked ChatGPT, cited evidence pointing to violations of the EU’s GDPR.
OpenAI has been invited to submit counterclaims within the specified timeframe. The final decision will consider ongoing efforts by an EU task force addressing concerns related to ChatGPT. Last year, the Italian watchdog criticized OpenAI for lacking a legal basis for mass data collection and raised concerns about the transparency of data usage.
