Insecurity: Northeast Residents Lose Confidence in Security Agencies

Residents across the Northeast, especially in Borno State, have strongly condemned the killing of Brigadier General M. Uba, describing it as another painful reminder of the country’s deepening insecurity.

Many citizens say their confidence in Nigeria’s security system has sharply declined as attacks by Boko Haram, bandits, and other armed groups continue to claim lives.

Speaking to The News Chronicle on Tuesday, residents and experts shared concerns over the worsening situation.

Mohammed Bundi, an economic analyst in Maiduguri, said the prolonged insecurity has crippled Nigeria’s economy.

“The issue of insecurity has already damaged the economy of this country,” he said. “If a Brigadier General can be easily killed, what will happen to ordinary citizens? This has been happening since 2009. When will insecurity end?”

Some residents expressed frustration that after more than a decade of conflict, Boko Haram still controls or influences several areas, making normal life nearly impossible.

They say the continued loss of lives and property shows that the government has not found a lasting solution.

Residents also say they feel abandoned by those in power and fear the situation may continue to worsen unless drastic measures are taken.

Malam Ibrahim, a resident, believes the situation has reached a point where military rule may be the only option.

“Nigeria needs military rule at this time because things are getting worse every day. People are tired and losing hope,” he said.

In recent weeks, Boko Haram fighters have intensified attacks in several parts of Borno State, killing soldiers, raiding communities, and displacing residents.

In Kebbi State, gunmen abducted more than 25 schoolgirls after invading a secondary school at dawn, killing the security guard and vice principal.

These incidents have deepened fear across affected regions and sparked nationwide conversations about leadership and the capacity of the security forces.

For now, people of the Northeast are pleading for urgent and decisive action to restore peace.
