Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed concerns about his age, arguing that it should not be used to question his ability to serve as Nigeria’s president.
Atiku spoke during a BBC Hausa interview when he was asked whether his age could affect his performance if elected president in 2027.
The interviewer noted that Atiku would be 80 years old in 2027 and asked whether his age could pose a challenge to his ability to govern the country.
Responding, Atiku compared concerns about his age with those surrounding President Bola Tinubu.
“You chose Bola Tinubu, who is 90 years old, so why would my age be a problem?” Atiku said.

The former vice president, who is seeking to return to the presidency in 2027, has repeatedly highlighted his experience in public service as an advantage in his political campaign.
The issue of age and physical fitness is expected to remain a major subject of debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly as several leading political figures are in their advanced years.
