IMF Warns Food Price Surge Could Push 20 Million Africans Into Hunger

—

The International Monetary Fund has warned that rising food prices and fresh inflation pressures could drive more than 20 million people across sub-Saharan Africa into hunger, deepening hardship for millions of vulnerable households.

After posting its fastest expansion in a decade last year, the IMF reported in its latest Regional Economic Outlook that the region entered 2026 with strong momentum. That progress is under threat right now, though, from repeated global crises, rising commodity prices, and tighter financial conditions.

The Fund says that a major rise in global food prices could significantly worsen food insecurity across Africa. Higher prices for shipping, fertilizer, and fuel are already driving food prices, it pointed out, and are also endangering agricultural output in many nations.

The News Chronicle understands that low-income and oil-importing countries already spend a large share of their income on food; therefore, the burden will probably be most onerous. Additionally, worsening the crisis are weaker currencies, high imports, and strain on government finances.

From 3.4 percent in 2025, the IMF projected regional inflation could reach 5.0 percent by the end of 2026, reversing some of the progress made through past reforms and therefore helping to stabilize worldwide costs.

From 4.5% last year, economic expansion in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to drop to 4.3% in 2026.

The IMF advised governments to provide targeted assistance to vulnerable individuals, preserve food access, and maintain ongoing general reforms aimed at boosting long-term economic resilience to lessen the effects.
