ICPC Warns Contractors in Borno Against Using Floods as Excuse to Abandon Projects

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has cautioned contractors in Borno State against using the recent flood disaster as a pretext to abandon constituency projects.

Speaking in Maiduguri on Tuesday, the ICPC’s Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Borno State, Mr. Ishaku Sakaba, issued the warning as the commission began tracking 76 projects worth N11.7 billion across the state’s three senatorial zones.

Sakaba explained that the exercise aims to ensure strict adherence to due process in project execution, enhance value for public funds, and promote compliance with contract specifications.

“We monitor projects to ensure they are completed properly. If they are poorly executed, we ensure they are rectified, and if funds need to be recovered, we take action,” he said.

He revealed that the commission is currently tracking projects worth a total of N11,666,698,198.47 in the state.

Sakaba emphasized that the ICPC would follow through on all projects to ensure accountability and compliance, warning contractors against blaming the floods for unfulfilled obligations.

“Contractors must provide evidence, including photos, to show that their projects were completed. If they claim floods destroyed the projects, there must be visible proof, and residents can verify what actually happened,” he stated.

Sakaba encouraged members of the public to report poorly executed projects, assuring them that the ICPC would investigate and ensure proper action is taken.

“If a project is not completed to standard, people should report it. We will continue to follow up even after this exercise,” he added.
