FG Assures Nigerians of Stable Electricity Reforms Without Tariff Hike

The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, stating that its current focus is on improving power supply, expanding universal metering, and enhancing service delivery across the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made this known in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to Tegbe, the administration is committed to ensuring that Nigerians pay only for the electricity they consume through the implementation of universal metering, while also strengthening the overall performance of the power sector.
He added that the government would continue to explore additional measures to protect vulnerable electricity consumers while ensuring the financial sustainability of the electricity market.
“The Federal Government will also continue to examine additional mechanisms for protecting vulnerable consumers, whilst simultaneously improving the financial sustainability of the market,” Tegbe said.
The minister stressed that the ongoing reforms in the power sector are centred on effective implementation, discipline, coordination, and measurable results that positively impact the lives of Nigerians.
“Our ambition is clear. Reliable electricity that powers our homes. Competitive electricity that powers our industries. Sustainable electricity that attracts investment. Inclusive electricity that reaches every Nigerian,” he added.
The government’s position comes amid concerns over rising living costs, with authorities assuring Nigerians that efforts are currently directed at improving electricity services rather than increasing tariffs.
