Part of Wuse Market in Abuja was set on fire by some hoodlums and touts.
They did this because they were angry that a person who was being judged in the market’s court tried to run away and got shot by a police officer. The police officer was not identified yet.
A person who works for the Abuja Markets Management Limited (AMML), who didn’t want to say their name, confirmed this.
They said the person who got shot had already been found guilty of doing something wrong, but they didn’t say what it was.
When the police tried to take the person to court, they tried to run away, so the police shot them.
Because of this, the hoodlums got angry and started burning shops, the AMML office, and some cars in the market.
This made everyone scared and they started running away to save themselves or their things. Some people got hurt while trying to escape, but it’s not clear how many or how badly.
A person named Innocent Amaechina, who is the spokesperson for AMML, confirmed that their office, along with other shops and cars, got burnt.
They couldn’t say who started the fire because the Fire Service and Police had taken control of the area and they couldn’t go there.
When they asked the police for more information, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said she was still gathering facts about what happened.
