The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has called on Muslims and Christians to dedicate their fasting periods to prayers for lasting peace in the state and across Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday evening by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor urged both religious communities to intensify prayers as Muslims enter the final days of Ramadan while Christians observe Lent.
Zulum said the last 10 days of Ramadan offer a special opportunity for Muslims to seek divine mercy and blessings.
“As we usher in the last 10 days of the Holy month of Ramadan, let’s intensify prayers to Almighty Allah and beseech Him, through all other acts of worship, to attract His mercies, blessings, and rewards,” he said.
The governor noted that the call for prayers comes amid renewed attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in parts of Borno.
He revealed that he would also dedicate his pilgrimage to the Holy Land to special prayers for an end to the insurgency.
“This is a month of prayers and supplications. Let us renew our faith in the wake of the recent attacks on our communities. I will also participate in special prayers with fellow Muslims in the Holy Land for an end to this protracted conflict,” Zulum stated.
He also appealed to the Christian community observing Lent to join Muslims in praying for peace and stability in the state.
Describing the recent wave of attacks as temporary, the governor expressed optimism that the state would overcome the security challenges.
“We shall emerge victorious, Insha Allah,” he said.
In recent weeks, terrorists have intensified attacks across Borno, reportedly killing and abducting residents. Communities affected include Ngoshe, Konduga, Mainok, Kukawa, Goniri, and Delwa, where military bases were reportedly raided and several security personnel and civilians killed.
