Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, disclosed plans to implement seven pilot communities as part of his irrigation strategy aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national food security initiatives.
The identified locations for the seven irrigation schemes include Gajibo in Dikwa, Jafi in Kwaya Kusar, Baga in Kukawa, Logumani in Ngala, Damasak in Mobbar, Dadin Kowa in Bayo, and Mafa Local Government Areas.
Governor Zulum, speaking in Mafa on Wednesday, emphasized the initiative’s alignment with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda to bolster food security in Nigeria.
He highlighted the commencement of the Mafa irrigation scheme, targeting the involvement of at least 10% of communities in dry season farming, supplying farmers with essential inputs.
Zulum expressed a commitment to President Tinubu’s agenda, outlining plans to venture into wheat farming and other valuable crops.
The governor underscored the initiative’s broader aim of enhancing community members’ livelihoods.
we have so far identified a number of farmers and we have provided them with agricultural inputs. We intend to engage at least 10% of the communities, especially in the dry season farming,ā Zulum said.
During the visit to Mafa, Zulum inspected various facilities, including fully solar-powered free-flow deep aquifer boreholes and an earth dam with a capacity of about 2.4 million liters.
Additionally, he assessed the Mafa mega water works, a significant infrastructure addressing the town’s water scarcity issue, with a combined 400,000-liter capacity in surface and overhead tanks.
Governor Zulum ordered the reticulation of the water supply system to ensure convenient access for residents, particularly those who previously had to travel long distances to fetch water.
These initiatives collectively underscore the state’s dedication to agricultural development and essential infrastructure improvement in pursuit of national food security objectives.
