Former CAF President Issa Hayatou has died at 77 in France.
In tribute, CAF President Motsepe has requested that the CAF flag and those of all CAF Member Associations be flown at half-mast until 13 August 2024.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his condolences: “I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of President Issa Hayatou, the Fédération Camerounaise de Football, its President Samuel Eto’o, and the people of Cameroon. CAF and African football will always remember President Hayatou for his immense contributions to the sport’s development in Africa.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also honored Hayatou: “I am saddened by the passing of former CAF president and FIFA interim president Issa Hayatou. A devoted sports administrator, he dedicated his life to the sport. On behalf of FIFA, I offer condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. Rest in peace.”
Hayatou’s extensive career included 29 years at the helm of CAF and influential roles within FIFA, including membership on its executive committee, now known as the FIFA Council, from 1990 to 2017.
