Pepe Announces Retirement from Football at 41

Pepe, the Portugal defender, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 41, concluding a 24-year career.
Recognized as one of the sport’s most decorated players, Pepe set a record as the oldest participant in a European Championship final this year.
With 141 caps for the Portuguese national team, he ranks as the third most-capped player, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Moutinho.
In a heartfelt 33-minute video posted online, Pepe expressed gratitude to everyone who supported his career, including club presidents, staff, and those working behind the scenes.
“I can’t help but thank all the presidents who bet and believed in me to be able to perform my work.
“To all the employees of all the clubs I’ve been to, who are the soul and essence of the clubs and the national team. And I want to thank everyone in the background. I want to leave a thank-you and a hug of gratitude for all of you.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, a former teammate, commented on Pepe’s retirement, saying, “We achieved everything on the pitch, but the greatest victory is the friendship and respect I have for you. You’re unique, my brother. Thank you for everything.”
Throughout his career, Pepe won nearly 30 club trophies with FC Porto and Real Madrid, including multiple league titles and Champions League titles, and secured the UEFA European Championship and UEFA Nations League with Portugal.
