Former Boko Haram members finish deradicalization in Gombe

Repentant Terrorists

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Army celebrated the graduation of 22 former members of Boko Haram.

These individuals had completed a Deradicalisation, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRR) program in Gombe State. The ceremony took place at Malam Sidi camp in Kwami Local Government Area.

Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, emphasized the importance of the DRR program, operated under Operation Safe Corridor (OSC), as a crucial non-kinetic approach by the Federal Government to address terrorism and insurgency.

He highlighted that since the program’s initiation in 2016, over 2,168 Ex Boko Haram have undergone training and reintegrated into society.

Musa announced an overhaul of the OSC, aiming for improved outcomes. This includes modifying the curriculum and digitizing the profiling system for participants.

He assured that efforts were underway to enhance the monitoring process of program graduates, ensuring their conduct aligns with societal expectations.

The CDS dismissed concerns that the OSC might be reintegrating terrorists into society, labeling such claims as false and unpatriotic.

He clarified that there was no covert recruitment into the Armed forces, Nigerian Police, or other security agencies.

Appealing to host communities, Musa urged acceptance, tolerance, and kindness toward the reintegrated individuals.

He emphasized viewing them as victims of circumstances in need of support to overcome the impacts of terrorism and insurgency.

Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Adamu, the Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, disclosed that the 22 graduates would be reintegrated into their communities.

These individuals had arrived at the camp between February and April 2023 and underwent various activities focusing on cultural, religious values, and mental well-being.

Mohammed Kyari, speaking on behalf of the graduating clients, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and OSC officials.

He pledged that he and his colleagues would embrace a new path, becoming positive contributors to society by being loyal to authorities and leveraging their training for the benefit of their communities.
