FGN Targets N700bn as Bond Auction Opens to Investors

—

The Federal Government is set to raise N700 billion from the domestic debt market through a bond auction scheduled for Monday, April 27, 2026, as authorities step up funding for budgetary needs.

According to information made public by the Debt Management Office, the offer would be carried out through three already-issued bonds with various maturities.

The issuance comprises a five-year bond maturing in 2030 for N300 billion; a seven-year bond maturing in 2032 for N100 billion; and a 10-year bond also valued at N300 billion. Two days after the auction, settlement is anticipated.

Driven by increasing yields and the relative safety of government-backed bonds, investor interest is still strong, especially as stricter monetary conditions keep transforming the fixed-income market, The News Chronicle gathered.

The auction coincides with high yields; among the securities available, the longer-dated 2035 bond has the greatest yield. Analysts claim this might attract institutional investors, banks, and pension funds seeking consistent, predictable income.

Because of their low risk profile, tax benefits for some investors, and active trading on both the Nigerian Exchange and FMDQ platforms, FGN bonds remain top choices in Nigeria’s financial market.

Market participants are expected to closely watch the outcome of the auction, as it may provide fresh signals on interest rate direction and investor sentiment in the coming weeks.
