The Federal Government announced on Monday that it will do a mini-census focusing on education to help deal with the many problems in the sector.Â
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, said this in Abuja during a workshop for desk officers in the ministry and its agencies. The workshop was about implementing government priorities for education.
The Minister said the government would work with an ICT company to collect data on all schools in Nigeria, including the number of schools, teachers, students, and classrooms.
This data will help in decision-making and planning. It will also help advise state governments on the right policies for schools.
“It is our plan that by the end of this year or early next year, we will be signing a partnership contract with a firm that will be working with our IT people to generate data on all schools in Nigeria.
“This is because we need to know our teachers and every single student; we need data to know the trend of learning and our school infrastructure.
Mamman urged officials to focus on achieving government goals in education. These goals include collecting accurate education data, improving skills, training teachers, and reducing the number of out-of-school children.
“I believe if we get it right in education, everything else will fall into place”.
President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Education includes 23 goals and a roadmap for the sector from 2024 to 2027.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, said the training aims to improve officers’ ability to track and report education activities.
