FG Launches Smart School Protection Strategy to Boost Security Nationwide

The Federal Government has unveiled a Smart School Protection Strategy in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to strengthen security across schools nationwide and ensure a safer learning environment for students and teachers.

The initiative introduces modern, intelligence-driven security measures, including smart surveillance systems, panic alert technology, rapid response mechanisms, and enhanced command and control centres.

These features are designed to improve threat detection, enable swift emergency responses, and prevent attacks on schools, particularly in vulnerable communities.

As part of the strategy, a dedicated Department of Safe School Initiative will be established to coordinate national policy, oversee monitoring and evaluation, and strengthen collaboration among relevant security and education stakeholders.

The NSCDC has been designated as the lead operational agency responsible for implementing and managing the security framework across the country.

According to the NSCDC, more than 60,000 out of Nigeria’s 81,000 schools currently lack adequate security infrastructure, a situation that highlights the urgency of the intervention.

The new strategy is expected to address existing gaps through the deployment of technology-driven solutions and improved coordination among security agencies.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding schools and ensuring uninterrupted access to quality education for every Nigerian child. It noted that the Smart School Protection Strategy represents a critical step toward restoring public confidence in the safety of educational institutions and protecting the future of the nation’s children.
