Nigeria Moves to Transform Technical Education Through TVET Partnership with Singapore

Nigeria is advancing efforts to strengthen its technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system following renewed bilateral engagement with the Government of Singapore aimed at deepening cooperation in skills development and institutional capacity building.

At a meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria received the High Commissioner of Singapore, Mr. Lim Sim Seng, to consolidate progress and chart the next phase of collaboration.

The engagement builds on outcomes from an official visit to Singapore last year and reflects a shared commitment to enhancing technical education and workforce readiness.

Under the partnership, Singapore’s Institute for Technical Education Education Services (ITEES) will support capacity development across Nigeria’s technical institutions through a range of strategic initiatives. These include leadership training for 40 heads of institutions, a Train-the-Trainer programme focused on modern assessment methods and pedagogy, and the deployment of the Global Excellence Model for Skills Training.

The model will assess TVET institutions nationwide across seven key dimensions of excellence to improve quality, governance, and performance.

The collaboration will also cover the development and rollout of a two-year technical diploma in Artificial Intelligence applications, designed to equip students with advanced digital and technical competencies aligned with emerging global industry demands.

Nigeria described Singapore as a leading global example of a skills-driven economy and expressed confidence in concluding the agreement soon.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s formal TVET system as a continental benchmark by promoting innovation, strengthening institutions, and delivering industry-relevant training.
