Federal Government Commends UNDP, Seeks Enhanced Collaboration for Development

The Federal Government has praised the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for its longstanding support through various developmental initiatives, expressing a commitment to leverage UNDP’s expertise to accelerate its reform programs.

During a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa, Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, commended UNDP’s contributions to Nigeria’s development at a meeting with the UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Elsie Attafuah.

“UNDP has been around in this country for a long time, and some of the things you have done, over a wide range of areas, are commendable. I want to thank you once more for your support for President Tinubu’s reform programs,” said Gbajabiamila.

He highlighted the significance of the Made-in-Nigeria policy, an integral aspect of President Tinubu’s reform agenda aimed at promoting industrialization. “The President is passionate about it. We had local content in the oil industry, but this is a much wider concept. How can we practicalize this and make it work, with all of its value chain and all that comes with it: employment, growth in the economy, among others?” he added.

Gbajabiamila also emphasized the need for UNDP’s intervention to increase female participation in politics and governance, drawing on successful experiences in other African nations. He noted that the agency’s insights could help Nigeria achieve these goals sensitively, respecting local cultures and religions.

The Chief of Staff further called for UNDP’s assistance in key sectors, including poverty reduction, education, agriculture, and mining.

In response, Ms. Attafuah expressed gratitude for the positive relationship between UNDP and Nigeria during her two-year tenure. She praised President Tinubu’s leadership, describing it as “inspirational and encouraging.”

“We are here to seek how we can continue to position Nigeria as the leader and giant of Africa, ensuring that we support Nigeria’s development initiatives and aspirations,” she stated.

Attafuah mentioned that the agency is transitioning from a project-based approach to a government-financing, long-term thematic strategy, underlining the importance of national governments taking charge of their own development initiatives through prudent resource utilization.

Notably, she highlighted the Made-in-Nigeria policy as a potential catalyst for job creation and economic competitiveness. Additionally, she announced the launch of the University Graduate Hub initiative, which enables graduates to showcase their product prototypes and connect with potential financiers. The UNDP is also exploring opportunities for collaboration in the education and energy sectors.

The meeting signified a continued partnership between the Federal Government and UNDP, aimed at propelling Nigeria toward sustained development.
