Fathers Must Do More Than Provide, Says Idahosa

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has challenged fathers and male guardians to embrace responsible parenting, describing it as a critical pillar for building a healthy and progressive society.

In a message commemorating Father’s Day, the deputy governor paid tribute to fathers, guardians and father figures for their unwavering dedication, sacrifices and invaluable roles in shaping families and communities.

He stressed that the role of a father extends beyond meeting financial obligations, noting that today’s realities demand greater emotional presence, moral guidance and active participation in the upbringing of children.

According to him, fathers remain central to nurturing stable homes and peaceful communities through their leadership, discipline and commitment to family values.

Idahosa observed that amid growing social and economic pressures, fathers bear an even greater responsibility to raise children who are responsible, compassionate and productive citizens capable of contributing positively to society.

He urged men to create time for meaningful interactions with their children through mentorship, open communication and consistent engagement, adding that such efforts strengthen trust, boost confidence and deepen family relationships.

The deputy governor further advised fathers to model the values they wish to see in their children, emphasizing that young people often learn more from what their parents do than from what they say. He therefore encouraged fathers to demonstrate honesty, discipline, accountability and respect in their daily conduct.

He also called on parents to prioritise education, skills development and personal growth for their children, describing such investments as enduring gifts that would continue to yield benefits long into the future.

Highlighting the importance of character formation, Idahosa urged fathers to instill virtues such as civic responsibility, tolerance and respect for others while paying closer attention to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of their children.

He equally underscored the need for teamwork between fathers, mothers and caregivers, maintaining that strong homes are built on cooperation, mutual respect and shared responsibilities.

“As we celebrate fathers today, let us recommit ourselves to building stronger families, safer communities, and a more prosperous Edo through responsible parenting and positive leadership at home,” he stated.

Idahosa also applauded fathers across Edo State and Nigeria for their resilience and selfless contributions to nation-building, expressing hope that their sacrifices would continue to bring lasting rewards.
