The Enugu State Government says skilled birth attendance in health facilities increased from 40.9 percent in October 2025 to 59.3 percent in March 2026.
The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Enugu, attributing the improvement to increased investment in healthcare and efforts by the Gov. Peter Mbah administration to reduce maternal and child mortality.
Ugwu said first antenatal care attendance also rose from 16.8 percent to 24.2 percent during the same period.
He said the increase reflected the impact of investments in healthcare infrastructure and human resources across the state.
“The massive investment in building 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), equipping and staffing them, as well as the revitalisation of 54 general and cottage hospitals and investments in two state-owned teaching hospitals, is yielding positive results,” he said.
Ugwu said the state had also approved the recruitment of more than 2,000 health workers for the PHC system, with deployment already underway across facilities.
He said the recruitment would further improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes across communities.

The commissioner added that the state was finalising preparations for a free, state-supported maternal and child healthcare programme expected to commence soon.
According to him, the programme will improve access to antenatal care, safe delivery, essential newborn services and treatment of priority childhood conditions.
“The aim is to bring together financing, primary care, emergency transport, Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care, Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care, and specialist referral into a single coordinated pathway,” he said.
