Following FIFA’s revised instruction on player release for the Africa Cup of Nations, organizers of the international friendly between Egypt and Nigeria have confirmed the game has been moved from December 14 to December 16.
As both teams increase preparations for the continental championship set to be held in Morocco from December 21 to January 18, 2026, the change guarantees that they will have their full complement available.
The Egyptian Football Association said that December 15 became the new date because clubs are now allowed to release their players only.
Particularly, Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, whose availability under the previous schedule would have been in doubt, this adjustment will ensure the presence of key players.
The shift in date has affected Nigeria’s original travel plans. The Super Eagles had previously intended to depart for Egypt on December 10 to begin a training camp that would precede the friendly.
With the revised timeline, the team may now need to reconsider its logistics, especially as the Nigeria Football Federation assesses new arrangements that align with FIFA’s release window.
For both sides, the friendly offers a crucial evaluation chance going into the competition. After placing second in 2017 and 2021, seven-time African champion Egypt is trying to reestablish continental supremacy.
To start their last preparation stage, the Pharaohs have put together a 28-man tentative squad in Cairo. Nigeria too is taking a great serious approach to the game as the Super Eagles continue to perfect their team chemistry ahead of AFCON beginning.
The rescheduled game should reveal a better idea of both teams’ preparedness as they seek to leave a significant mark in Morocco.
